Back Pain Q & A
What is back pain?
Back pain is a common pain condition. Though you may develop pain in any part of your back, the discomfort commonly occurs in the lower back, or lumbar spine.
Most people have acute back pain that lasts a few days or a few weeks. However, acute back pain may turn into chronic back pain, which is pain that lasts three or more months.
Dr. Fanaee is an experienced pain management physician who takes a patient-centered approach to care. If you have ongoing back pain, he can help.
What causes back pain?
Back pain most often occurs from a mechanical problem that affects the normal structure and function of your back. Common causes of back pain include:
- Sprains and strains
- Injuries
- Fractures
- Degenerative disc disease
- Herniated disc
- Sciatica
- Arthritis
- Radiculopathy
- Spinal stenosis
- Spinal deformities
- Osteoporosis
You may develop back pain after an injury or lifting something too heavy. However, many people develop chronic back pain because of the degenerative changes that occur in their spine as they get older.
These changes may compress, irritate, or pinch a spinal nerve or your spinal cord, causing pain.
What happens during a back pain evaluation?
When you see Dr. Fanaee to get help for your back pain, he conducts a comprehensive evaluation to determine the source of your pain. He asks detailed questions about the type of pain you feel and the activities that make it worse or better.
Dr. Fanaee reviews your medical history and the types of treatment you’ve tried to get relief from your back pain. He performs a physical exam, paying close attention to the structure of your spine, looking for areas of tenderness.
To confirm the underlying cause of your back pain or rule out a diagnosis, Dr. Fanaee may run imaging tests, such as an X-ray or MRI.
How is back pain treated?
Dr. Fanaee customizes your back pain treatment plan based on the underlying cause of your discomfort, the severity of your symptoms, and your medical history. Initially, he may recommend conservative treatments such as medication and physical therapy.
However, if conservative treatments fail to provide significant relief from your back pain, Dr. Fanaee may suggest other treatments, such as:
- Epidurals
- Nerve blocks
- Radiofrequency ablation
- Spinal cord stimulator
- Intracept® Procedure
The pain expert works closely with you, designing a treatment plan that provides long-term relief and improves your quality of life.
You don’t have to live with chronic back pain. Schedule a consultation by calling the office of Dr. Eric K. Fanaee, MD, or booking an appointment online today.
